John Mefferd’s art was sparked by an eye-opening 1989 trip out west. Captivated by the West Coast and Rockies, he returned home burning to paint the vivid scenes echoing in his mind. His visionary landscapes are born from imagination, fueled by a passion for western terrain, nature, and Native American history.

I am the artist and creator of Imaginary Western Landscapes. My artistic journey began in 1989, when I left the flat Midwest for the western mountains of Boise, Idaho at the invitation of a good friend. After a year of exploring all of the Western United States, it was time to return home.
Before my return, my passion for painting was sparked when a friend gifted me a box of acrylic paints. I immediately started painting landscapes from my imagination.
Until this day, when I pick up a brush to paint, I feel the majestic embrace of how nature has filled my mind with big skies, mountains, and clear running streams.

I might be a little biased, but I truly believe acrylic paint is the most versatile tool an artist can have in their studio.
Acrylics can mimic almost anything. If I add a lot of water, it behaves just like watercolor. If I mix it with special thickeners, it stands up off the canvas in thick, buttery peaks just like oil paint.
As an artist, I find that acrylic paint really suits my style, lending itself nicely to the highly textured mountain landscape scenes that pour from my imagination.

It is a beautiful thing to paint from the imagination rather than a photograph. You are creating a world that belongs entirely to you.
Taking a walk with my wife through a mountainous landscape fills me with such awe, freedom, and admiration for the beauty of untamed nature that it takes my breath away. How a river has the power to cut through rock to create a canyon. How wild flowers can transport your imagination through vivid colors and aromas.
Tied to the history of the Western US, Native Americans help breathe life into the scenes I create and share my love for the beauty of their surroundings.
